The Tactical Air Command in Makurdi has taken delivery of the first set of the T-129 ATAK helicopters and King Air 360i aircraft being the most recent addition to the Nigerian Air Force inventory.
The equipment which was received in Makurdi, Benue State capital by Vice President Senator Kashim Shetima who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday marks a major milestone in the effort by the current administration to investing in national security.
According to the President, the acquisition of the fighter helicopter was necessary for improved delivery of robust air power in support of the ongoing counter-terrorism and efforts to combat other security challenges in the country.
“So far, I am glad that the platforms have continued to contribute immensely to the successes recorded in the decimation of terrorists, insurgents and other criminal elements threatening our dear nation,” Shetima said.
The VP noted that the Air Force, which was established in 1964 has played critical roles in national security as well as in peace-keeping and humanitarian operations around the world, Highlighting Its contributions to the sustenance and maintenance of peace and security in places like The Gambia, Guinea Conakry, Mozambique, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Guinea Bissau and Cameroun.
According to him, these milestones have projected Nigeria as a reliable regional power.
“This is indeed most commendable just as the Nigerian Air Force continues to synergize with other security agencies in curtailing the threats posed by terrorists, insurgents and other criminal elements in the country.
“These efforts are indeed consistent with the long-established reputation of the Nigerian Air Force as a service of excellence. I, therefore, commend the Chief of the Air Staff and the entire Nigerian Air Force family for their achievements over the years.
Rest assured that my administration will continue to support the Nigerian Air Force and indeed other security agencies by giving due priority to the modernization of fleets, training and welfare of our personnel,” the President stated in his remarks delivered by his VP.
Speaking with reference to his commitment as contained in his speech, President Tinubu said, “Recall that in my inaugural address, I stated that security shall be the top priority of my administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence. I also promised to deploy the entire machinery of state power to ensure the security of our people and their properties in a just and democratic society. In the same vein, I pledged to a just and democratic society. In the same vein, I pledged to put an end to terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping and other forms of criminality that have bedevilled our country over the years. It has been about 6 months since my proclamations and so much has been achieved due to the gallant and synergistic efforts of our various security agencies,” he said.
Continuing, the president said, “I am also pleased that coordination among our security agencies has greatly improved especially in recent months.”
He, however, said there is no room for celebrations until the country puts an end to the security logjam.
