The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended the nationwide industrial action that commenced on Tuesday,, October 14, 2023.
Joint National Executive Council of the two labour unions announced the suspension at the end of its meeting on Wednesday night in Abuja.
The development came a few hours after the labour leaders listed six demands and subsequently met with the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.
Part of the demands was the investigation, prosecution and dismissal of government and police officials involved in the attack on NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
NLC General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja noted that the NEC agreed to suspend the strike following a plea by Ribadu.
The meeting was held at the instance of Ribadu, who had earlier on Wednesday, begged organised labour unions to call off the strike for more negotiations.
“Organised labour got a commitment from the Nuhu Ribadu-led meeting that those arrested for the physical assault on Ajaero will be prosecuted,” Ugboaja said.
The NLC president was attacked and brutalised while preparing to lead a protest against the Imo State government over alleged non-payment of civil servants’ salaries for months.
To this end, the NLC, TUC and their affilliates declared the strike over the failure of the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute erring security agents that brutalised Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on November 1.
Addressing journalists after the meeting with the NSA, the TUC president, Festus Osifo hinted that the Federal Government through Ribadu promised to meet their demands.
