On the side line of the ongoing COP 28 Climatic change conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, has drawn the attention of World leaders to the devastating impacts of Climate Change in Nigeria which she said contributes 60% of the Humanitarian and Poverty challenges in Nigeria.
Citing specifics, Dr Edu said Climate Change is responsible for the loss of natural resources, food insecurity, displacements, causing direct and indirect social impacts among others in Nigeria.
Consequently, she has asked for global support for Nigeria to provide durable and lasting solutions to the devastating impacts of global warming which is one of the causes of Humanitarian crises and Poverty challenges in Nigeria and many other countries of the world.
The Minister stated at the conference that Nigeria is championing going-green policy sustainability as well as providing durable solutions for Humanitarian response to reduce multi-dimensional poverty, urging Development partners and foreign donors to support the government’s genuine Intention.
Dr Edu called on Humanitarian organizations across the world especially those at the conference to support the proactive approach of President Tinubu’s government in dispassionately addressing the global climate change impacts in Nigeria.
The minister said Nigeria will take advantage of opportunity of the global stage to attract International partnership that will help in reducing Humanitarian crises and Poverty challenges in Nigeria in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the Minister, President Tinubu, who is scheduled to address over 70,000 World leaders on Saturday, had earlier charged all participants from Nigeria to strive for Nigeria to emerge from the conference with tangible commitments, reinforcing our dedication to a where energy is not only a catalyst for development but also a driver of environmental stewardship.
Nigeria is among top countries in the world to formally approve funding for Climatic impact response she said.
