Dubai: Tinubu to Highlight Nigeria’s Stance on Climate Financing

President Bola Tinubu has concluded arrangement to deliver a national statement that would highlight Nigeria’s stance on various thematic issues including renewable energy and climate financing.
This is even as the President will depart Abuja on Wednesday for the 28th edition of Conference of Parties (COP28) Climate talks holding in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Also known as United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) or Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP28), will witness the World Leaders’ Summit, which takes place between December 1 and December. 2 with the theme, “Unite, Act, and Deliver”.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelala on Wednesday revealed that Tinubu would dwell on the severe impact of climate change on Nigeria such as desertification, flooding, erosion, drought and national security risks.
He noted that the President would maximise the opportunity created by the platform to advocate increased financial and technical support from developing nations.
Ajuri informed that Tinubu would also remind developed countries of their public pledge to provide $100 billion annually to support localised initiatives aimed at addressing climate change-related challenges in developing countries.
Tinubu’s message will also focus on holding businesses and institutions accountable, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices.
The Nigerian delegation to COP28 will actively explore establishing new and deeper bilateral partnerships to implement Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), technology transfer, capacity building and methane mitigation.
Ngelale hinted that Tinubu’s active participation in key sideline events would further support the advancement of his avowed commitment to attract foreign direct investment.
He was optimistic that the participation would further enhance wealth creation and revenue expansion in the country.
Tinubu is also expected to participate in other events hosted by Nigeria’s delegation to the climate talks.
He will be accompanied by senior government officials and expected to return to Abuja at the end of the summit.
