2000 Ebonyi Flood Victims Get Relief Materials

At least, 2000 victims of the 2023 flood disaster in Ikwo Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi State have received assorted relief materials worth N80 million.
The relief items were distributed by the member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon Chinedu Ogah in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at Ohatekwe Amagu in Ikwo LGA.
Ogah commeded President Bola Tinubu for granting the request to assist victims of flooding in various constituents of the state.
The materials included bags of rice, beans, garri, mattresses, blankets, cash and other non food items.
He praised the Vice president, Kashim Shettima; Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, and the state Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru for their support so far.
Ogah thanked the Director General of NEMA, Mr Mustapha Ahmed for giving the state a sense of belonging.
The South-East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mrs Ngozi Echeazu said that the donation was made for June 2023 flood victims to alleviate their suffering.
Echeazu, who was represented by an official of the agency, Mr Nnayelugo Ezeani noted that the donation was not a compensation and replacement for their huge losses but for encouragement and support from the Federal Government to assist them.
She harped on the need for early campaign, continuous sensitisation, meetings and collaboration among community leaders to prevent and address flood disasters.
“In June 2023, NEMA and the state agency came for assessment to ascertain the level of damage which affected buildings, household items, farmlands and economic trees.
“People should ensure they do not build on water ways and flood prone areas,” Echeazu added.
The Chairman of the LGA, Mr Sunday Nwankwo lauded the Federal Government and the lawmaker for attracting the gesture to the area.
Nwankwo disclosed that the state government is making efforts to reverse the incident in the state, just as he requested for continuous enlightenment on best ways to reduce the impact of flood.
